Are you struggling with resentment, envy, preoccupation with other people’s work? Read this:
Is this a piece that I’m going to finish? If I start, am I willing to put in a lot more hours than I think making it something good and worthwhile?
If you’re disappointed with the quality of your ideas, spend uninterrupted time (more than 30 minutes, 90 minutes is optimal) with just a notebook, thinking about the problem and sketching out ideas. As in meditation, when your mind wanders, just gently bring it back to the subject.
When you rest, devote yourself to actually resting. Don’t fill your mind with noise. Don’t scan YouTube. Don’t try, don’t think, don’t strategize. Rest, fully, until you are rested.
Draw only what you enjoy. If you find yourself just dragging yourself through a drawing, either you’re tired (take a break) or you’re not drawing things you enjoy. If you enjoy the drawing, others will, too. If you draw as if it’s a chore, the work will be as a chore to those who see …
