Is there any details you can add to make the piece feel more “lived-in” and real? What about a history, and a sense of time?
Do you need to exaggerate something normal to make it fantastic?
Do you need to start with the familiar? Take apart objects you know to build something new.
What feeling do you want to evoke with this piece? Google that feeling at look at what works make you feel that feeling. Why?
Do you need to make a 3D model to reference? Use https://www.tinkercad.com/. It’s quick to learn, and really helps nail thte basic shapes of a character, especially if your’e drawing the character from multiple angles (like in a 2D video game).
Do you need to take reference photos? Do you need to dress up in a costume?
Do you need reference for mood? Light? Clothing? Character? Color?
The real world is always more complex and interesting than what you make up purely in your head. If you think you know how to draw a hat, you’re probably just drawing a boring icon of a hat. Look up pictures, steal details, make it distinctive, textured, weathered, lived-in.
